Prolactogenic effects of etizolam

The benzodiazepines (BZs) are the most widely used hypnotics. The thienobenzodiazepine derivative etizolam, 6-(o-chlorophenyl)-8ethyl-1-methyl-4H-s-triazolo[3,4-c]thieno[2,3-e] [1,4]diazepine, is a comparatively new potent anxiolytic and/or hypnotic [1]. The BZs have been considered largely free of neuro-endocrine effect [2]. However, hyperprolactinemia and galactorrhea have been suggested to be induced by etizolam [3]. A small study was conducted on female patients with dementia to evaluate the prolactogenic effects of etizolam.
